I was always curious about the world when I was a little kid, and when I was at school. But I really loved art as well as science, and when I started my A-levels I had to make a choice between the two, which was really really hard.

I chose science subjects then, and that put me on a course to doing science at university, and getting a job in science was the obvious thing to do after that! Now I split my time between doing science, and doing art and writing occasionally. I think that if I’d chosen art in the first place, I could never have carried on science occasionally – you need the support of a university or a lab for science, but you only need a pencil to do art!

Since I chose my A Levels I knew I wanted to do something related to science, but I wasn’t sure what exactly. I’d always been interested in space, but hadn’t imagined a career relating to it, the right opportunity came along at the right time and I took it.

It always just seemed quite natural. I was always good at science at maths at school, though I liked things like english and art too. I chose maths, physics and computing for my A-levels which wasn’t such a great idea but I found them pretty easy, so when it came to choose what I wanted to do at University I sort of fell towards physics as I knew I was interested in space. I actually chose Astrophysics, but it turned out the astro (stars) bit I didn’t like so much!

I actually wrote a project all about exploring Mars for my physics a-level so I guess that’s when I started turning into a planetary scientist!
