• Question: do you think solar flares will destroy the earth

      They might kill us off, but they’re unlikely to do much damage to the planet.

      No. The Sun it too far away at the moment to destroy the Earth. You need to wait 5 billion years for that to happen.

      Unlikely because the sun is a relatively quiet star (boring?).

      Not unless we lose our magnetic field beforehand… Our magnetic field protects the atmosphere from being blown away by the constant solar flares, and it has a big job on its hands when there are lots of solar flares because the ‘wind’ of particles is much stronger. But the worst that can happen with solar flares is that it might knock out some satellites that are further away from earth and create some beautiful northern lights!
