I have done a project which used images of nearby galaxies (and things called globular clusters in them – basically big collections of stars) which were taken by one of the most famous satellites – the Hubble Space Telescope. I used it to show that all the globular clusters seemed to have the same size no matter how bright they are – that tells something really interesting about how they formed. It’s also interesting, because it could potentially be used to measure distances to galaxies.
I use really high resolution pictures of the earth taken by satellites, to track rock outcrops that I might not be able to get to on foot, and to also look at changes in forests and algal blooms in the ocean.
I’ve never looked at space from a satellite, but I have used satellites which are used to look at the ground. The project I was working on was to to compare measurements of how much energy was sent out from the Earth (measured by the satellite) with what was predicted by climate change models.
