My first degree was 3 years long. It was meant to be 5 as it was in Scotland (where it works slightly differently to England), but I changed from a masters to a batchelor’s degree and kind of skipped the first year because I did well in my A-Levels.
I did another course after my degree for a year and then went to work for a while.
While I was doing this I did an Open University course in my spare time, for about 8 months.
After that, I went to do a Master’s degree for a year, and then started applying for PhDs.
I only started doing my PhD last year.
All in all I have been at university for about… 6 years.
I did my first degree in Oxford for four years, but because Oxford has a silly system, i came out with two degrees!
A few universities I applied to offered to let me start in the second year, and so only do two or three years, because I had already done geology at school. But I’m glad I did the whole course because I got more time with friends and learnt new things while I was at uni.
I stayed in Oxford to do my PhD, to become a Dr. I’ve been at it for 4 years and will hand in on 1st May hopefully! So about 8 years in total.
I spent 3 years doing a BA in Physics at Oxford, then 5 years at Cornell University (in the US) where I got a Masters degree and a PhD in Astronomy (sort of at the same time). So 8 years at university in total – technically for 4 degrees (because I also have an MA (Oxon) from Oxford, which is a special degree you get for going to Oxford or Cambridge). 🙂
