      The most common kinds of stars actually live for a really long time – more than a billion years. So only stars in the very most distant galaxies we see (more than a billion light years away) would be “already burnt out”. More massive stars light for more like 1 million year, so most of those even in the nearest galaxies (like Andromeda which is 2.6 million light years away) would already be dead.
