Same distance as you I suppose, although I was alive in 1987 when a supernova went of in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which is a dwarf galaxy about 160,000 light years from us. You probably weren’t yet alive then, so maybe I do beat you! 😉

A supernova was noticed on Saturday in a galaxy about 30 million light years away called M95: http://thebeautifulstars.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/beautiful-galaxy-m95-another-supernova.html

About as near as Karen, although I was only 1 year old then!

As near as you have been, on Earth!

If we were too close to a supernova, it would kill you almost instantly because of the gamma radiation. (One of the types of radiation that is most dangerous.) In fact, people have worried that a supernova happening too close to Earth might kill everyone on the planet.

And Karen made a good point: I was 10 in 1987.
