Eek! I am handing in my latest thesis on the 1st of May this year, and it will be about 400 pages long. So far i only have about 100 pages, so a long way to go, and a few late nights yet!

After that, I hope to be starting a new project in America, working with NASA to use algae to keep astronauts alive in space. Cool huh!?!

      August 31st 2014

(But I hear people rarely finish in the 3 year deadline!)

Our instrument is due to launch to Mars in 2018, but this date has already changed several times. We have to have it finished by 2015. After its flown to Mars there will be data to analyse too so it could be a long time, but I’ll probably start working on some other projects too before that.

I actually have lots of different projects going – some just starting, others almost finished (I hope). I shared an almost complete draft of my latest project using Galaxy Zoo classifications late last week and hopefully will get lots of comments from my collaborators soon to work on.

A new thing for me this year is that I have a PhD student of my own I’m advising. So that project is just starting and will take him (with my help) I hope 3 years!

My research fellowship ends in October, but we are writing a proposal to the funding council right now to ask for more money to do something similar, and that would extend it by another 2 years. And then after that, we come up with another idea and write another proposal, and so on.

When you are really famous, like the people from Manchester who won a Nobel prize, then it might be a little bit easier for your proposal to win the money (because it is a competition) but everybody has to compete.
