A pregnancy tests works using antibodies. Antibodies are produced by the immune system in order to help fight infections. they can very specifically recognise particular chemicals and types of bacteria. Pregnancy tests use an antibody that recognises a hormone produced by pregnant women that can be detected in urine. If the hormone is present in the urine the antibodies bind to it and you get a signal. The Life Marker Chip will use antibodies that recognise other types of chemicals that are evidence of life on Mars! We will add a liquid to martian soil and then test that liquid to see if there are any chemicals in it that the antibodies can bind to.
