i spend a lot of time thinking about this, and sometimes I even get paid to do it!

We don’t know if there are any intelligent aliens out there. We haven’t made contact with any, and because space is so huge, we might never be able to. But even if there are intelligent aliens, they might not look like us. Think about all the weird and wonderful creatures on earth, and how different they look. There’s nothing in particular that makes a human shape special. Intelligent life will probably have things to sense light (like eyes) sound (like ears) and touch (like skin), and will probably a central area to process all the informaion (like a brain), but there is no limit to how they can be arranged!

Most ‘aliens’ are likely to be non-intelligent though, and probably not much more complicated than our bacteria and microorganisms. These may look similar to bacteria on Earth, and we could find them in the Martian soil, or in the ice inside Europa, by looking for the patterns they create or the things they make.

Aliens could look very strange to us and it might be difficult for us to imagine. The type of aliens we are looking for on Mars are too small to see with your naked eye. You would have to use a microscope.
