Probably comes from ‘movie stars’ which would be from the early days of hollywood, because the actors ‘shone’ in the their movies or some such rubbish.

I don’t know. Interesting question! I named my science blog “Beautiful Stars” after a quote by the physicist Richard Feynman which starts:

“Poets say science takes away from the beauty of the stars – mere globs of gas atoms. I too can see the stars on a desert night, and feel them. But do I see less or more?”

But I didn’t realise until after I did it that this makes it basically impossible to find on Google as it’s hidden in all sorts of stuff about how pretty celebrities are. Oh well! 😉

      It’s http://thebeautifulstars.blogspot.co.uk/ by the way.

Because they are pointless balls of hot gas?

Probably because they glitter when the photographers flashes reflect off their shiny white teeth.

They are far more boring than real stars!
